Programme:
1. Digital libraries: basic elements
What is a digital library? Definition of the concept, historical notes, features and architecture. The Kahn/Wilensky Framework.

2. Digital photography: basis techniques
Characteristics of digital images. How a digital camera works. Storing and distributing digital photographs.  

3. Standards and guidelines for the digitisation of artistic heritage  
From the good practices manual of MINERVA (MInisterial NEtwoRk for
Valorising Activities in digitisation, eContentplus) to
TASI (Technical Advisory Service for Images) specifications.

4. Metadata
Problems in indexing digital images. The RDF/XML model.
EXIF/IPTC Standards.


ALBERTO SALARELLI (Parma, 1967) is a lecturer in "Basic IT Sciences" on the degree course in Artistic, Theatrical, Cinematographic and New Media Heritage at Parma University. His research is particularly focussed on documentation in digital formats and on the relationship between librarianship, society and new technologies. His publications include: World Wide Web (Roma, AIB, 1997), La biblioteca digitale (The Digital Library) (with Anna Maria Tammaro, Milan, Bibliografica, 2000; 2006) and Bit-à-brac. Informazione e biblioteche nell'era digitale (Information and Libraries in the Digital Age), Reggio Emilia, Diabasis, 2004. He writes for the arts pages of "Il Tempo", for the "Italia oggi" newspaper and for the "MenSA - Culture e piaceri della tavola" magazine.
